Charlie Kirk’s assassination on Wednesday sent shockwaves across America. The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was gunned down during a student Q&A at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. But instead of treating the murder of one of the nation’s most prominent young conservatives with sobriety and respect, MSNBC used its live coverage to smear Kirk in death — blaming his own words for the bullet that struck his neck.
MSNBC Analyst Blames Kirk for His Own Murder
Anchor Katy Tur turned to network analyst Matthew Dowd for reaction. Dowd speculated, bizarrely, that Kirk could have been shot by a supporter “in celebration” — as if Utah Valley resembled Kabul. Then he pivoted to blame Kirk himself, calling him “divisive” and accusing him of spreading “hate speech.” According to Dowd, “hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions.” In other words, Kirk invited his own assassination by daring to speak the truth about the Left, globalism, and the cultural rot consuming America.
Tur did not push back. She allowed Dowd to suggest that the free speech Kirk exercised — the same freedom the Constitution guarantees — was directly responsible for his violent death.
MSNBC Scrambles After Backlash
By Wednesday evening, MSNBC issued a mealy-mouthed apology. Network president Rebecca Kutler admitted Dowd’s comments were “inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable,” but only after bipartisan outrage erupted. Americans saw the grotesque attempt to dance on Kirk’s grave for what it was: partisan venom masquerading as analysis.
Yet the backlash was so overwhelming that MSNBC was forced to act. Variety confirmed that Dowd was fired, his tenure as a DNC mouthpiece abruptly ended. For a man who built his brand on preaching “civility,” his response to a political assassination revealed something darker: that civility only applies when it protects the Left.
A Symptom of a Greater Sickness
The firing does not absolve MSNBC. For years, the network has normalized hate toward conservatives, painting patriotic Americans as “threats to democracy” while excusing violent radicals on the Left. Dowd’s comments were not a slip of the tongue — they were the logical outgrowth of a media culture that dehumanizes Christians, conservatives, and Trump supporters.
This is the fruit of a propaganda machine that conditions half the country to believe their fellow citizens are enemies. It is lawlessness clothed in journalism. And just as the Bible warns in Isaiah 5:20, they “call evil good, and good evil.”
Prophetic Implications
Charlie Kirk’s death is a tragedy, but it also stands as a prophetic warning. In the last days, truth-tellers will be hated, persecuted, and even killed for their witness (John 16:2). Kirk spent his life proclaiming the truth about America’s founding, the Christian faith, and the globalist agenda destroying our freedom. His assassination — and the media’s vile attempt to smear him even in death — illustrates exactly the spiritual war America is in.
MSNBC’s belated firing of Dowd is not justice. It is damage control. The real question is: how many more voices will be silenced before America realizes that the very freedoms Charlie Kirk fought for are under open assault?
