Nepal has descended into absolute chaos after the government’s draconian move to ban 26 social media platforms triggered unprecedented street violence. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Reddit were all abruptly blocked on September 4, 2025, under the pretense of fighting “misinformation.” The Committee to Protect Journalists called the move a blatant attack on free speech, and the backlash was immediate and violent.
Digital Crackdown Ignites Furious Youth Rebellion
For years, Nepali youth have endured rampant corruption, deep poverty, and elite privilege. The sudden loss of their digital lifelines was a spark in a powder keg. Within hours, thousands of young protesters, mostly Gen Z, flooded the streets of Kathmandu and other major cities.
What began as peaceful demonstrations erupted into a full-scale rebellion on September 4–5. Security forces responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, killing at least 19 protesters and wounding hundreds, according to The Guardian.
Symbols of Power Reduced to Ashes
The uprising quickly turned destructive. Protesters stormed Nepal’s Parliament, setting fire to the building and looting government offices. Singha Durbar, or the Lion’s Palace — the largest palace in Asia, housing the Prime Minister’s residence and several government offices — was engulfed in flames. Many politicians reportedly fled by helicopter as protesters set their homes on fire.
Tragedy at the Home of a Former Prime Minister
The violence claimed an appalling human toll. Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, the wife of former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal, was trapped inside her home in Dallu, a posh Kathmandu neighborhood, and burned alive. She suffered severe burns to multiple parts of her body, including her lungs, and died during treatment at Kirtipur Burn Hospital, local media reported.
“The incident took place at Dallu, where protesters set the house on fire,” said Khabarhub. “Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar was trapped and could not escape. She later succumbed to her injuries.”
The Fallout: A Nation on the Brink
Nepal’s social media ban, intended to control information, has instead shattered civil order. The uprising exposes the deep resentment of Nepali youth toward a political elite they view as corrupt, disconnected, and oppressive.
Experts warn that this is not just a domestic crisis. With global attention on Nepal now heightened, international diplomatic pressure is likely to escalate, especially as human rights groups condemn the deaths of peaceful protesters and the horrifying killing of Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar.
Nepal’s streets are now filled with fire, smoke, and chaos — a stark reminder that suppressing information in the digital age carries catastrophic consequences.
