A Tacoma man was tragically found murdered at the Burning Man festival in Nevada last weekend, sparking a homicide investigation as festival authorities raced to collect evidence before the temporary city was dismantled.

The Discovery
Pershing County Sheriff’s deputies say the killing occurred on Saturday, August 30, around 9:14 p.m., as the iconic festival “Man” was beginning to burn. A participant flagged down deputies, reporting a man lying in a pool of blood at a campsite within the festival’s temporary settlement, Black Rock City.

Deputies, along with Bureau of Land Management rangers, responded and found a white man who was “obviously deceased”. Law enforcement quickly established a perimeter and called in a forensics team to process the scene and collect evidence. Nearby attendees were interviewed, though authorities faced a unique challenge: gathering sufficient evidence before thousands of participants left the temporary city.

Victim Identified
On Tuesday, the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the victim as 37-year-old Vadim Kruglov of Tacoma, Washington. According to KTVU, Kruglov was originally from Russia. The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the victim’s family, stating:

“Our sincerest condolences from the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office go out to Vadim Kruglov’s family for their tragic loss.”

Investigation Underway
The PCSO emphasized the complexity of investigating a homicide in a temporary city:

“There is no further information available at this time but it will be released as appropriate to provide for communication, while still preserving the integrity of the complicated investigation of a crime in a city which will be gone by the middle of the week.”
