A Bellevue man is facing serious charges after allegedly attacking his manager with a hammer inside an Applebee’s, leaving both men hospitalized in a bloody and violent confrontation.
The Assault
Authorities say Marco Antonio Herrera-Chan, 48, entered the Applebee’s on Bel Red Road on August 31 after the restaurant had closed. Court documents reveal Herrera-Chan approached his manager, said “lo siento” (“I’m sorry”), and struck the victim on the head with the handle of a hammer.
Despite being dazed and bleeding from the first blow, the manager blocked Herrera-Chan’s second swing. An eight-minute struggle ensued, during which the manager grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed Herrera-Chan multiple times in self-defense.
Officers later arrested Herrera-Chan after he reportedly followed his manager outside, eventually being located in a nearby wooded area. Both men were transported to Overlake Medical Hospital with injuries, while police noted a significant amount of blood across the restaurant.
Conflicting Statements
The motive remains unclear. The victim, who had worked alongside Herrera-Chan for eight months without incident, said:
“He was a good employee. I don’t know why he struck me.”
Police interviews suggest Herrera-Chan claimed his mind “closed” and that he did not know why he attacked his manager. He admitted to using the hammer but insisted he did not intend to kill his boss, otherwise he would have used the metal part of the hammer or knives.
During the attack, the manager said he thought Herrera-Chan said “this is for my mother”, though investigators are still determining the relevance of this statement.
Surveillance and Evidence
Bellevue police reviewed surveillance footage showing Herrera-Chan removing the hammer from his backpack before striking the manager. The video reportedly captured most of the violent confrontation, which lasted 15–20 minutes.
Legal Proceedings
Herrera-Chan is charged with first-degree assault and is being held on $100,000 bail. He is expected to enter a plea in court on September 9.
