While the world has watched the Druze community in Syria face massacres and displacement, another tragedy has quietly unfolded—Christians in As-Suwayda and eastern Daraa Governorates are facing systematic attacks, forced displacement, and the destruction of their communities. Father Toni (Anton) Boutros, the priest of Al-Baath and surrounding areas, is sounding the alarm and pleading for the world to stand with these Christians before it is too late.

Christian Communities Targeted
In eastern Daraa Governorate, there are roughly 100,000 Christians, and in As-Suwayda Governorate, nearly 30,000 Christians live among Druze and other communities. As Bedouin militias, alongside Syrian Internal Security Forces and General Security, targeted Druze villages, they also swept into Christian villages, setting churches ablaze, burning homes and vehicles, and stealing personal property. Though Christians were not killed in the same numbers as Druze, lives were lost, and more than 250 Christian families fled their homes, now living as refugees.

Global Silence Amid Massacre
While Druze leaders such as Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif traveled to the U.S. Congress, the UN General Assembly, and Europe to raise awareness, and diaspora communities staged protests around the world, Christians in As-Suwayda received far less attention. Father Toni Boutros emphasizes that the Christian world has largely remained silent, leaving victims without advocates on the global stage.

A Call for Unity and Action
Father Boutros is now appealing directly to Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif and Christian leaders worldwide to stand in solidarity with the Christians of As-Suwayda. He urges international communities to raise awareness and provide practical aid, stressing that the fate of these villages mirrors the suffering of the Druze communities that have received far more attention.

Prophetic Warning
The plight of these Christians is not only a humanitarian crisis—it carries prophetic significance. Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the importance of defending the vulnerable: “Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and oppressed” (Psalm 82:3). The global silence in the face of such atrocities may invite judgment upon nations that turn away from the suffering of God’s people.

Bottom Line
Christians and Druze in As-Suwayda Governorate face persecution, displacement, and violence. While some groups have garnered global attention, others—like these Christians—remain almost entirely ignored. Father Toni Boutros’ urgent plea is a call for the Christian world, policymakers, and humanitarian organizations to act immediately. The time for advocacy, aid, and prayer is now.
