Venezuela is quietly turning into Latin America’s first armed-drone power — and Washington is watching closely. Sources reveal that Caracas has developed a fleet of advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with direct assistance from Iran, just as tensions spike with the arrival of multiple U.S. warships in the southern Caribbean.

From Chávez’s Secret Drone Program to Armed UAVs

The story begins in 2012, when Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez publicly showcased three prototype drones, claiming they were for surveillance only. What wasn’t publicly disclosed then was the secret six-year partnership with Tehran that made the program possible. Iranian experts from Qods Aviation Industries provided Mohajer-2 drone kits, training, and technical know-how, allowing Venezuela to build reconnaissance and later armed systems, including stealth and kamikaze drones.

One source told The Herald: “Cooperation with Iran was essential. Venezuelan personnel can’t enter these facilities without Iranian authorization.”

By 2022, Venezuela unveiled its ANSU-100 and ANSU-200 drones. The ANSU-100, capable of launching Iranian-designed Qaem air-to-ground bombs, made Venezuela the first Latin American country to field armed drones. The ANSU-200, a flying-wing stealth model, showcases next-generation UAV technology inspired by Iran.

Iranization of Venezuela’s Military Doctrine

Analysts warn that these drones mark an “Iranization” of Caracas’ military approach, allowing the country to compensate for conventional shortcomings. Suicide drones, or “loitering munitions,” have also been introduced. The Zamora V-1, unveiled in 2024, mirrors Iran’s Shahed-136 model used by Russia in Ukraine and can carry explosives for short-range strikes.

U.S. Warships Gather in Response

The timing is no coincidence. The Trump administration has deployed a powerful naval task force — including three guided-missile destroyers, a nuclear attack submarine, and 4,000 Marines — to the Caribbean under the guise of anti-narcotics operations. The move follows the U.S. increasing its bounty on Nicolás Maduro to $50 million, citing his leadership of the so-called “Cartel of the Suns.”

In response, Caracas has mobilized millions of militia members and announced plans to deploy drones and warships. Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López said the operation includes “a significant deployment of drones with different missions, citizen support points, exploration and surveillance, river patrols with the Marine Infantry, and naval patrols in Lake Maracaibo and the Gulf of Venezuela.”

Regional and Global Implications

Neighbors are concerned. Colombia formally protested Venezuelan UAV incursions into its airspace, and Israeli officials have voiced alarm over Iranian drone technology reaching Latin America. Western intelligence reports indicate that Venezuela’s drone program may serve as a production and transit hub for Iranian UAV systems, including high-resolution cameras, control stations, and even missile-capable drones.

The ANSU-100 systems, capable of both surveillance and offensive strikes, heighten the risk of regional incidents. Analysts warn that the combination of Iranian technology, Maduro’s anti-U.S. posture, and an expanding drone fleet could destabilize the Caribbean and Latin America.

Conclusion: A New Asymmetric Threat

Venezuela’s drone capabilities, now armed and operational, represent a significant shift in military dynamics for the Western Hemisphere. While small in scale compared to U.S. conventional forces, these drones give Caracas an asymmetric option to challenge or intimidate regional actors. With Iranian guidance and technology transfer, Washington must contend with a growing drone threat on its southern flank — one that could extend far beyond surveillance and into lethal force.
