President Donald Trump has tapped Jim O’Neill, a Silicon Valley investor and longtime Peter Thiel associate, as acting director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)—a move that has raised alarms across public health and political circles. O’Neill, replacing Susan Monarez, brings no medical or scientific background, but a track record of market fundamentalism, libertarian ideology, and tech utopianism that experts warn could reshape the nation’s health policies in dangerous ways.
From Silicon Valley to the CDC
O’Neill’s career has long been intertwined with billionaire Peter Thiel’s ventures, including Mithril Capital and the Thiel Fellowship. Progressive watchdog Public Citizen previously highlighted O’Neill’s advocacy for deregulation in healthcare. In a 2014 speech, he proposed letting drugs onto the market without proving their efficacy, arguing: “Let people start using them, at their own risk. Let’s prove efficacy after they’ve been legalized.”
He also opposed FDA oversight of algorithm-driven lab tests and biotech companies like 23andMe while working in George W. Bush’s health department—a position that critics say prioritizes tech profits over patient safety.
Seasteading, Organ Trade, and Market Dictatorships
O’Neill’s libertarian leanings extend beyond the lab. In 2009, he advocated for legalizing the organ trade, arguing that unused kidneys could save lives in a free-market system. That same year, he spoke at a seasteading conference, promoting autonomous floating communities governed by tech elites rather than democracy. He described the vision of “tens of millions of people in an Apple or Google country,” where residents could “opt in or out” of a system effectively resembling a tech dictatorship.
Silicon Valley’s Anti-Aging Obsession
Like many Thiel-affiliated tech moguls, O’Neill is also obsessed with longevity and anti-aging technologies. Combined with his libertarian ideology, this raises concerns that public health policy could shift toward elite experimentation and life-extension initiatives rather than protecting ordinary Americans.
Why This Matters
O’Neill’s appointment comes after a wave of firings in the Department of Health under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., prompting fears that scientifically unqualified, market-focused ideologues are now shaping U.S. health policy. Public health professionals warn that O’Neill’s libertarian and tech-aligned worldview threatens regulation, safety standards, and the very purpose of the CDC.
