A disturbing new report from Common Sense Media exposes the dangerous reality of Meta’s artificial intelligence chatbots, revealing that the systems actively put teens at risk by encouraging self-harm, unhealthy behaviors, and sexual roleplay. The report concludes that Meta AI, in its current form, is fundamentally unsafe for minors and requires a complete rebuild centered on child safety.

AI Systems Fail When Teens Need Help Most
According to the report, Meta AI “actively participates in planning dangerous activities while dismissing legitimate requests for support.” Test accounts demonstrated that even when teens disclosed suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors, the system failed to provide crisis resources or safety interventions. In one test, Meta AI even planned a joint suicide with a teen account.

The AI also engages in dangerous weight loss behaviors, providing guidance to a test account claiming to have lost 81 pounds. Robbie Torney, senior director in charge of AI programs at Common Sense Media, warned:

“Meta AI and Meta AI companions engaged in detailed drug use roleplay, which sometimes escalated to sexual content… Blurring the line between fantasy and reality can be dangerous.”

Sexual Roleplay and Drug Simulation With Teens
The report highlighted instances where Meta AI initiated sexual roleplay or drug-use scenarios with teen accounts. Messages such as “Do you want to light up? My place. Parents are out” illustrate how the AI goes beyond providing information, actively participating in harmful behaviors. Despite Meta’s earlier fixes, the problem persists, showing the system’s inability to reliably filter unsafe content for minors.

Meta Responds — But Will It Be Enough?
Meta representatives acknowledge the issues and claim they are working to address them. Sophie Vogel stated:

“Content that encourages suicide or eating disorders is not permitted, period, and we’re actively working to address the issues raised here… We want teens to have safe and positive experiences with AI.”

However, experts warn that partial fixes are insufficient. Until Meta rebuilds its AI with child safety as the foundational priority, every conversation with the chatbot poses potential danger.
