Nickel Without Iron: A Cosmic Red Flag
The Very Large Telescope in Chile detected an unusual nickel plume from 3I/ATLAS — without a trace of iron. Harvard physicist Avi Loeb points out that in nature, nickel always appears alongside iron in comets, formed during supernovae. The anomaly mirrors industrial techniques used to refine nickel alloys, raising questions about whether 3I/ATLAS is technological rather than natural.

“Is this anomaly another clue for a possible technological origin?” Loeb asked in a blog post, highlighting the unusual chemistry of the object, which also emits cyanide at 20 grams per second, far above normal comet levels.

A Comet Like No Other
NASA’s SPHEREx and James Webb observations reveal that 3I/ATLAS is dominated by carbon dioxide and dust, with just 5% water — highly unusual for comets, which typically shine from ice and water vapor. Its brightness comes from a dense dust cloud rather than a solid core, and Hubble has failed to detect a conventional cometary tail.

Researchers note that as 3I/ATLAS approaches the Sun, both nickel and cyanide emissions spike sharply, a process not seen in natural comets. Loeb adds that the nucleus may be much smaller than initial measurements suggested, with the dust halo reflecting nearly all the sunlight — almost as if the object is engineered to interact with solar radiation in a controlled way.

Alien or Natural?
Loeb has floated the provocative possibility that 3I/ATLAS is an artificial craft created by an extraterrestrial civilization. Critics like Oxford astronomer Chris Lintott dismiss this as “nonsense on stilts,” but the chemical anomalies and atypical behavior leave the scientific community puzzled.

Discovered in July 2025 by the ATLAS telescope network, 3I/ATLAS may have been captured in earlier images from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory without anyone realizing it. Its enormous size, odd emissions, and unusual brightness make it unlike anything previously observed in our Solar System.
