German authorities have reportedly identified and charged seven suspects in the September 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions that devastated the Baltic Sea infrastructure. Six of the suspects are Ukrainian nationals, while the seventh is said to have died in eastern Ukraine in December 2024 during fighting with Russian forces.
Investigators allege the group operated with a clear division of roles — including a skipper, coordinator, explosives expert, and four divers — traveling from Rostock on the sailing yacht Andromeda to carry out the sabotage. Arrest warrants have been issued for all suspects, though some have eluded capture by leveraging false identities and ties to the Ukrainian military. One suspect was reportedly transported from Poland to Ukraine in a car belonging to the Ukrainian military attaché to avoid arrest.
According to Sputnik and Germany’s ARD TV, investigators have uncovered “clear links” between the suspects and the Ukrainian Armed Forces and intelligence services, though it remains unproven whether the attack was officially sanctioned by the Ukrainian state.
The Nord Stream investigation continues to raise questions about the true mastermind behind the attack. While Germany points to the Ukrainian-linked team, journalist Seymour Hersh has suggested a CIA operation, a theory that still holds plausibility for many analysts.
The case marks a significant escalation in geopolitical tensions surrounding energy infrastructure, intelligence operations, and the murky world of international sabotage.
