A Visitor From Beyond the Stars
First detected in July 2025 by the ATLAS telescope network, 3I/ATLAS is only the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system, after the much-debated ‘Oumuamua (2017) and comet Borisov (2019). Unlike comets formed around our own sun, this mysterious traveler originated in a completely different star system—possibly on the far side of the Milky Way itself.

Moving at nearly 150,000 miles per hour, the comet is not bound by the sun’s gravity. It will pass through our system, making close approaches to Venus, Mars, and Jupiter before heading back into interstellar space. On December 17, it will come within 223 million miles of Earth—close enough for NASA’s most powerful telescopes to study it in detail.

Why Scientists Are Baffled
New scans have revealed 3I/ATLAS is much smaller than initially believed—just 1.7 miles wide instead of the 12-mile monster first estimated. The confusion arose because over 99% of its brightness comes not from its solid body, but from a massive cloud of dust and gas known as a coma.

What makes this coma so unusual is its composition. Unlike typical comets, which release water vapor and carbon monoxide as they approach the sun, 3I/ATLAS is spewing out vast amounts of carbon dioxide gas—940 trillion molecules per second. Even stranger, the comet’s surface appears covered in water ice, yet very little water vapor has been detected. NASA believes the CO₂ may be insulating the ice, keeping it frozen despite the sun’s heat.

In addition, the comet’s tail is not the familiar streak we see in our skies but a more uniform glowing cloud—something scientists admit they have never seen before.

Echoes of ‘Oumuamua
This is not the first time an interstellar visitor has defied expectations. In 2017, ‘Oumuamua stunned astronomers by accelerating out of the solar system in a way that natural explanations struggled to justify. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb famously suggested it might be an artificial probe from another civilization. Loeb is now studying 3I/ATLAS and has noted its strange composition, orbit, and uniform glow could signal an origin unlike anything in our system.

Loeb and student researcher Shokhruz Kakharov have even traced the comet’s likely origin point to a dense region of the Milky Way’s disk filled with older stars—meaning this object could be older than our sun itself.
