A shocking case out of South Korea is exposing the depths of political appeasement and the erosion of religious freedom in East Asia. Six U.S. citizens—Christians motivated purely by missionary and humanitarian purposes—have been referred to prosecutors for sending rice, $1 bills, and Bibles toward North Koreans, the world’s most oppressed population.

On June 27, 2025, the Americans, aged 20 to 50, attempted to float approximately 1,300 plastic bottles off the coast of Ganghwa Island, a border area near North Korea. Each bottle contained food and scripture intended to feed and spiritually encourage starving North Koreans. No weapons, no propaganda leaflets, no espionage—just rice and Bibles.

A Legal Distortion
Instead of being recognized for charitable action, the six Americans now face prosecution under the Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety—a statute designed for genuine threats to public safety. The potential penalties? Up to one year in prison or a ₩10 million ($7,500) fine.

South Korean authorities justified the arrests by citing a local administrative order banning balloon or bottle launches toward North Korea, aimed at avoiding provocation of the Kim regime. In effect, South Korea is prosecuting U.S. citizens to appease a brutal dictatorship.

Religious Freedom Under Fire
Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)—which South Korea has ratified—guarantees the right to manifest one’s religion “in teaching, practice, worship and observance.” Sending Bibles to those living under persecution falls squarely within this right. Yet these Americans are being criminalized for exercising it.

A Dangerous Precedent
This is the first reported case of Americans being prosecuted in South Korea for delivering missionary aid across the DMZ. If allowed to stand, it signals that anyone trying to reach North Koreans with food or scripture could face criminal punishment, effectively silencing acts of compassion and faith.

Appeasement Over Justice
The Lee Jae-myung administration is not merely enforcing a safety regulation—it is extending its crackdown to foreign citizens of faith, prioritizing political appeasement over the rule of law. Rice and Bibles are being treated as contraband, a disturbing symbol of tyranny influencing the judicial system.
