At a recent WEF session, World Bank president Ajay Banga declared rice an “existential” danger to the planet, citing methane emissions as the new villain.

“We’re talking about taking out ten million tonnes of methane by focusing on [rice paddy cultivation], on animal and dairy, and on waste management,” Banga said. Methane, he argued, is “eighty times more dangerous than carbon dioxide.” The implication was clear: rice farmers—millions of whom are poor, rural, and dependent on the crop for survival—are to blame for a climate “crisis” that conveniently justifies radical intervention in global food systems.
