In one of the largest overnight strikes of the war, Russia launched 614 drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles across Ukraine, killing one, injuring dozens, and destroying an American-owned electronics facility less than an hour from two NATO borders, officials confirmed Thursday morning. The attack comes amid President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts to force Moscow to end its invasion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strike on the U.S.-owned private company “very telling,” noting that several cruise missiles targeted civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings and businesses. The company, Flex Ltd., headquartered in Austin, Texas, produces consumer electronics like coffee machines, with no involvement in military production or defense contracts. A spokesperson for Flex confirmed that emergency protocols were executed, the site was fully evacuated, and six individuals remain hospitalized.
The city of Mukachevo in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region, where the facility is located, sits just 30 miles from NATO member countries Hungary and Slovakia. Officials confirmed about 15 injuries across the region from the overnight bombardment. Ukrainian authorities say the scale of the attack, involving 574 drones and 40 missiles, signals an escalation in Russian targeting of civilian-linked infrastructure, particularly facilities with U.S. investment.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the strike underscores Russia’s disregard for civilian and economic targets, even when unrelated to the military, describing it as “an insane anti-record” in the conflict. “Several cruise missiles were lobbed against an American-owned enterprise… and yet it was also a target for the Russians. This is very telling,” he said.
The White House has not issued a public response regarding the strike targeting a U.S. company. President Trump, speaking earlier in the week, noted that it is “possible that [Putin] doesn’t want to make a deal” and indicated that upcoming meetings with Moscow could clarify intentions.
NATO officials and Western allies continue to question Russia’s willingness to engage in genuine peace negotiations. France, a leading supporter of Ukraine, said the strike demonstrates that Moscow’s claims of readiness to negotiate are dubious. “These attacks… illustrate Russia’s lack of any genuine intention to engage seriously in peace talks,” a spokesperson said, while also expressing support for Trump’s initiative for a just and lasting peace.
The targeting of civilian-linked, U.S.-owned facilities near NATO borders raises serious concerns about escalation and signals that Moscow may increasingly view foreign investment as fair game, even amid ongoing diplomatic efforts. With the world watching, the strike highlights the high-stakes environment surrounding Trump’s push for negotiations, and the fragile line between diplomacy and continued military aggression.
