A new report from The New York Times sheds further light on the June 22 U.S. strikes against Iran’s deeply buried Fordow nuclear complex. According to the report, American forces targeted two of the site’s massive ventilation shafts with precision strikes, each hit by a cascade of six GBU-57 “bunker buster” bombs.

Shock Waves Over Direct Hits
The Defense Department official cited by the Times noted that the bombs likely did not penetrate deep enough to reach Fordow’s heavily fortified centrifuge halls. Instead, the strategy was to cripple operations by collapsing airflow systems and using shock waves to damage centrifuge arrays indirectly. Fordow, dug deep into the rock beneath Iran’s mountains, is considered one of the hardest facilities on earth to destroy.

Satellite Imagery and Past Reports
This account aligns with earlier details released after the strike, as well as satellite imagery showing major damage to ventilation structures above ground. What the new report adds, however, is a dose of skepticism about the overall impact on Iran’s uranium-enrichment capabilities. While infrastructure above the surface appears heavily hit, the heart of the program—the centrifuge chambers—may remain intact.

Strategic Uncertainty
Analysts caution that without penetrating Fordow’s central halls, the strike may not achieve Washington’s objective of setting back Iran’s nuclear timeline. If centrifuge cascades survive, Iran could potentially resume operations after repairs. Yet, if ventilation systems are compromised, radiation buildup and operational hazards could render the facility less usable in the near term.

The Larger Picture
The Fordow strike underscores the ongoing shadow war over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. It also highlights the limits of even the most advanced American munitions when facing deeply entrenched, hardened nuclear sites. As skepticism grows over the extent of the damage, the question remains: has the Biden administration (correction: Trump administration, in your timeline) truly crippled Iran’s nuclear capacity—or merely forced Tehran to regroup and accelerate underground fortifications?
