Erin Dominates Headlines, But Watch the Next Two Threats
Hurricane Erin has captured the spotlight this week, but meteorologists are keeping a close eye on two additional storm systems developing in the Atlantic. Both are currently in the early stages, but forecasters warn they could evolve into tropical depressions or storms, adding more chaos to an already active season.

Westernmost Area: Threatening the Leeward Islands
The first system, located between Africa and the Lesser Antilles, is already producing broad areas of thunderstorm activity. As it continues its westward journey, the environment ahead is expected to become more conducive to development. Experts say this area could become a tropical depression by late this week or the weekend.

Even if it does not officially strengthen, the system will still bring unsettled weather to the Leeward Islands by Friday, compounding the effects of Hurricane Erin’s outer rainbands from last weekend. Residents and travelers in the region should prepare for heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and localized flooding. At this point, the exact track of this potential storm remains uncertain, but it is one to watch closely as conditions evolve.

Easternmost Area: Invest 99L Near Cabo Verde
Meanwhile, a second low-pressure system has formed south of the Cabo Verde Islands off the coast of western Africa. The National Hurricane Center has tagged it Invest 99L. Currently, conditions are only marginally favorable for development, meaning a short-lived tropical depression could briefly form before environmental factors suppress further strengthening.

Unlike the westernmost system, Invest 99L is far from immediate danger to the Caribbean or U.S. coastlines, but forecasters emphasize that it could evolve over the coming weeks, and early monitoring is key.

Storm Names to Watch
If either system strengthens into a named storm, the next names on the Atlantic list are Fernand and Gabrielle. These potential storms underscore that the 2025 hurricane season remains active and unpredictable, and residents in hurricane-prone regions should remain vigilant.

Stay Informed and Prepared
As the National Hurricane Center continues to track these developing systems, it’s crucial to monitor updates frequently. Early awareness, preparedness, and adherence to local advisories remain the best defense against rapidly evolving tropical weather in the Atlantic basin.
