A 60-year-old man was hospitalized with bromide poisoning after following dietary advice from ChatGPT, according to a case report in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
The man, seeking to cut salt from his diet, asked the AI for a substitute. ChatGPT allegedly recommended sodium bromide — a chemical compound primarily used in pesticides and industrial applications, not food. Unaware of its dangers, the man bought sodium bromide online and used it in place of table salt for three months.
Eventually, he began experiencing paranoia and hallucinations, and even suspected a neighbor was trying to poison him. At the hospital, doctors determined his symptoms were caused by bromide toxicity — a condition far more common in the early 20th century, when bromide salts were used in over-the-counter sedatives and medications. Such cases became rare after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration phased out bromide between 1975 and 1989.
While the man recovered, the incident serves as a warning about over-reliance on AI for medical or dietary decisions. Experts stress that AI tools can produce authoritative-sounding but unsafe advice, and their recommendations should always be cross-checked with medical professionals or trusted health resources.
