An explosion rocked the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works plant near Pittsburgh Monday morning, leaving multiple workers injured and some trapped under rubble as emergency crews race to rescue them.
The blast and ensuing fire began around 10:51 a.m. local time, sending thick smoke billowing from the steel plant located in Clairton, Pennsylvania, approximately 15 miles south of Pittsburgh.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and have since transported at least five injured individuals to nearby hospitals. However, the extent of their injuries remains undisclosed, and no fatalities have been confirmed so far.
Abigail Gardner, Director of Communications for Allegheny County, described the situation as an “active scene,” emphasizing ongoing rescue efforts.
The cause of the explosion is currently unknown, with investigations underway.
Local officials, including Clairton Mayor Rich Lattanzi and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, have issued statements urging the public to follow local authority guidance and keep the affected community in their prayers.
This tragic event underscores the risks inherent in industrial operations and highlights the critical role of emergency services in crisis response.
