The Growing Danger of Smart Appliance Sabotage

Today’s electric grid is increasingly vulnerable—not just from cyberattacks on utility companies, but through everyday smart devices like electric vehicle chargers, smart ovens, and laundry machines. These Internet of Things (IoT) devices, often manufactured or controlled by companies with ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), consume substantial electricity and can be manipulated remotely.

Studies cited in the bill warn that a coordinated attack flipping thousands or millions of these appliances could destabilize the grid’s frequency, triggering cascading failures and widespread blackouts. Such an event would be catastrophic, threatening national security, public safety, and economic stability.

Key Measures in the PROTECT the Grid Act
