The Federal Reserve poses a serious threat to both individual liberty and the economic well-being of the United States, warns journalist and educator Alex Newman in a recent interview on VCY America. The central bank’s control over the nation’s money supply is eroding people’s livelihoods and undermining national prosperity.

The U.S. Constitution clearly limits the power to regulate money to Congress alone. Article I, Section 8 grants Congress authority to “coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin.” Furthermore, Article I, Section 10 states that no state shall “coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts.” This firmly establishes gold and silver coin as the only constitutional legal tender.

By contrast, the Federal Reserve, a creation of Congress but independent in its operation, issues fiat currency in the form of Federal Reserve Notes—paper money not backed by gold or silver. This system has created a monetary monopoly that the Constitution never intended, enabling inflation, devaluation of purchasing power, and economic instability.

Critics argue the Fed’s unchecked power effectively amounts to Congress delegating its constitutional authority over money to an unaccountable central bank. This has led to decades of policies that inflate the money supply, distort markets, and favor financial elites at the expense of ordinary Americans.

For many, the Federal Reserve represents not only a threat to sound money but a looming danger to constitutional governance and liberty itself. Understanding its origins and constitutional implications is essential for anyone concerned about the future of America’s economy and freedom.
