Russia is sounding the alarm ahead of the highly anticipated summit between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska. Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s investment envoy, warned that certain unnamed countries will make “titanic efforts” to sabotage the meeting. These efforts, he said, will include “provocations and disinformation” aimed at undermining any progress toward peace.
The summit comes amid reports that Russia and Ukraine are nearing a ceasefire deal that could end the three-and-a-half-year conflict. While details remain undisclosed, the deal may require Ukraine to concede significant territory—an outcome opposed by many European nations. Dmitriev accused some nations of wanting to prolong the war for their own interests, and thus working to prevent the two leaders from coming to terms.
The Kremlin officially confirmed the summit, with Putin aide Yuri Ushakov emphasizing the focus on exploring “options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis.” He acknowledged the difficulty ahead but affirmed Russia’s commitment to engaging “actively and energetically” in the process.
This summit represents a critical juncture in global geopolitics, with the potential to reshape the trajectory of the Ukraine conflict, US-Russia relations, and broader European security. However, as Moscow’s warning suggests, powerful interests may resist efforts toward peace, seeking instead to keep tensions high for strategic gain. The coming weeks will reveal whether diplomacy can overcome such disruptive forces or if the summit will be derailed by geopolitical sabotage.
