A dramatic escalation in global tensions unfolded Monday as Russia repositioned at least four Tu-95MS strategic bombers — part of its nuclear arsenal — closer to Europe. The move comes just days after President Donald Trump deployed two U.S. nuclear submarines “closer to Russia” in response to threats of atomic war issued by Kremlin insider Dmitry Medvedev.

Putin’s Nuclear Chess Moves
Russian state-aligned outlet Insider UA confirmed that four Tu-95MS bombers have been redeployed from Russia’s far eastern Ukrainka airbase to more forward positions at Olenya and Engels-2 airbases — sites previously used to launch missile attacks on Ukraine.
This repositioning reverses Russia’s prior decision to move its strategic bombers deep into the Far East for protection following a successful June 1 Ukrainian drone strike on Olenya. The return of these aircraft, reportedly now missile-equipped, represents what military experts are calling a dangerous and deliberate signal.
“Russia has transferred bombers from the Far East closer to Ukraine,” said a source cited by Insider UA. “Some of the aircraft are already equipped with cruise missiles.”
The Tu-95MS, nicknamed the “Bear” by NATO, is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear payloads. Its renewed presence closer to NATO airspace is triggering alarms across Europe.
Trump Responds: Submarines ‘Where They Have to Be’
President Trump responded swiftly to Russian provocations, confirming late Sunday that two American nuclear submarines have been quietly deployed “where they have to be.” His remarks follow former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s veiled threat of atomic war, a statement Trump labeled “highly provocative.”
“If Putin escalates, we will be ready,” Trump declared during a press briefing at Camp David.
Trump’s administration has also dispatched Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow for high-stakes talks — part of a final attempt to broker a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine. The diplomatic outreach, according to Trump, originated from the Kremlin itself, signaling possible cracks within Putin’s inner circle.
Putin Plays Good Cop While Medvedev Threatens Armageddon
Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, ignited the current flare-up with a chilling rebuke of Trump, accusing him of “bringing war closer” between Russia and the United States. Still, Peskov’s attempt at damage control did little to ease growing concerns that the world is edging closer to nuclear brinkmanship. The statement that “there can be no winner in a nuclear war” echoed long-standing Russian talking points — even as the Kremlin continues provocative military moves.
