In a move that has sent shockwaves through energy circles and sparked global speculation, the city of Cheyenne, Wyoming, is preparing to host a data center so massive that it would eventually consume more electricity than the entire state of Wyoming—twice over.

The proposed AI data center, a joint venture between Tallgrass Energy and AI infrastructure firm Crusoe, is projected to start at 1.8 gigawatts and eventually scale to a staggering 10 gigawatts. For comparison, Wyoming currently generates about 43.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually. The new facility, if fully deployed, would devour 87.6 TWh each year—doubling the state’s current output and fundamentally altering its energy profile.

AI Ambitions and Energy Consequences

Announced by Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins earlier this week, the center will begin with an eye-watering 15.8 TWh annual consumption—more than five times the total electricity used by Wyoming households today.

“This is exciting news for Wyoming and for Wyoming natural gas producers,” said Governor Mark Gordon, hailing the potential boom for the state’s fossil fuel sector. Indeed, the facility plans to rely heavily on self-contained gas-fired generation, along with some renewable sources, sidestepping the public grid but potentially siphoning fuel and infrastructure from other users.

This marks a seismic shift for Wyoming, the least populous U.S. state and historically a net energy exporter. Nearly 60% of its power is currently sold out-of-state. But projects like this could dramatically reorient that dynamic—especially as AI-driven megacenters begin competing directly with households and industries for resources.

Big Tech’s Next Black Box?

Despite the project’s size, Crusoe and Tallgrass have remained tight-lipped about who will actually use the data center’s immense computing power. This has only fueled speculation that the project may be connected to OpenAI’s “Stargate” infrastructure initiative—announced earlier this year as a plan to develop 5+ gigawatts of AI computing infrastructure across the U.S.

Crusoe already works with OpenAI and Oracle on another massive facility in Abilene, Texas, described as “the largest data center campus in the world.” When asked by the AP if the Wyoming site was part of Stargate, Crusoe spokesman Andrew Schmitt declined to comment: “I can’t confirm or deny that it’s going to be one of the Stargate.”

The Cost of Convenience: AI, Surveillance, and Resource Capture

The Wyoming facility may be emblematic of a much larger trend: the consolidation of computational power into massive, opaque AI clusters, increasingly detached from public oversight. If connected to Stargate or other OpenAI deployments, it would contribute to a global infrastructure that may one day govern everything from military strategy to medical decisions to internet access.

These AI systems, running on secretive datasets and proprietary logic, are being fast-tracked into existence with virtually no democratic input, while consuming unprecedented amounts of energy, land, and water.

The environmental cost is just the beginning. As critics have noted, the centralization of AI capability—particularly within Big Tech–government partnerships—could enable an AI-augmented surveillance state, one that feeds on our data and outpaces our ability to regulate it.

Prophetic Parallels: A Tower of Babel for the Digital Age?

From a prophetic worldview, these emerging AI behemoths evoke haunting parallels to the Tower of Babel—a structure built to reach heaven, driven by pride and unified human ambition. In this case, however, the tower is digital, sprawling, and fueled by the energy of entire states.

Revelation 13 warns of a coming system in which control is centralized, digital, and total: “He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark…” This future cannot exist without the backbone of massive AI infrastructure—exactly the kind being quietly constructed in places like Wyoming and Texas.

What begins as “tech innovation” and “economic development” may soon become the hardware for a worldwide system of control—powered by natural gas, steered by algorithms, and owned by those who answer to no one.

This isn’t just about a data center. This is about who owns the future—and what price the people of Wyoming, and America, are being asked to pay to build it.
