In a chilling development that underscores the growing dangers of synthetic biology, Japanese researchers have engineered a completely artificial strain of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus—one that has never existed in nature. The virus, named Vac-3, is a lab-assembled chimera combining genetic material from two wild avian flu strains, according to a new study published last week in the journal NPJ Vaccines.

This Frankenstein virus—A/duck/Hokkaido/Vac-3/2007 (H5N1)—was artificially constructed, grown in fertilized eggs, chemically inactivated, and used as a whole-particle vaccine in long-term testing on nonhuman primates. According to the study, Vac-3 is a “reassortant virus” between two avian influenza viruses, A/duck/Hokkaido/101/2004 (H5N3) and A/duck/Hokkaido/262/2004 (H6N1), spliced together in the lab to form a new, unnatural variant.

This virus was never observed in nature but was deliberately engineered for vaccine research. The method involved mass-producing the virus in chicken eggs before inactivating it with formalin to create the vaccine candidate tested on primates.

These projects involve synthetic DNA constructs and risky experiments infecting live animals, including dairy cows.

Moreover, Japan is collaborating with American scientists on even more unsettling research, including the creation of lab-made horse-human influenza hybrids. These viruses reportedly replicate up to 100 times faster than their natural counterparts and are developed using aborted fetal cells engineered with the cancer-linked SV40 virus. All these experiments are performed under the guise of vaccine development.
