Former staffers described a toxic workplace environment marked by intimidation, age and pregnancy discrimination, and pressured silence. According to multiple whistleblowers, female employees over 40 or those expecting children were sidelined, a practice that violates both ethical standards and Swiss labor law.
Manipulating Global Narratives: The Weaponization of Data
The scandal goes beyond personal misconduct and into the realm of geopolitical manipulation.
One of the most damning aspects of the probe is Schwab’s alleged interference in the Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) — a high-profile index used to assess countries’ economic performance. Investigators found:
- Schwab pressured WEF analysts to downplay post-Brexit gains for the United Kingdom.
- He pushed to inflate rankings for countries like India, fearing diplomatic backlash from leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- Confidential report drafts were leaked to foreign officials — in one case, an Arab diplomat objected to their country’s ranking and allegedly influenced final edits.
The GCR was quietly discontinued in 2022, and analysts now claim this was a direct result of Schwab’s tampering.
Legal Fallout: Swiss Authorities Weigh Criminal Charges
Following the investigation’s findings, Schwab transitioned into a non-executive role in 2024, shortly before formally stepping away from WEF leadership. But the legal clouds have not lifted.
