According to The Financial Times, the bill’s sudden passage “appears to have been sparked by investigations into members of Zelenskyy’s circle.”
Rather than face potential political fallout from open crackdowns or censorship, Zelensky has been forced into damage control, promising a new anti-corruption bill that supposedly “preserves independence” while purging “Russian influence.” But for many Ukrainians, the president’s rhetoric rings hollow.
Street Protests Explode as Trust Collapses
Footage from the streets of Kiev and Lviv shows tens of thousands of demonstrators waving Ukrainian flags and chanting slogans accusing Zelensky of betraying the revolution that ousted pro-Russian oligarchs nearly a decade ago.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) were created with heavy U.S. involvement, particularly under former Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland. By weakening these agencies, Zelensky may not only be challenging domestic democratic norms, but also curbing American influence — a move that could be read as a pivot toward a more nationalist or oligarchic model of rule.
A Turning Point in the War and the Narrative
With war fatigue growing across Europe and the United States, these internal power struggles could not come at a worse time for Zelensky. The image of a plucky, pro-democracy leader fighting for freedom has begun to crack under the weight of corruption, censorship, and centralized power.
Some geopolitical analysts suggest that Ukraine’s government may be mimicking the very authoritarian behaviors it once claimed to oppose — while using the war with Russia as a justification for suppressing political opposition, independent media, and now, the anti-corruption framework that once earned Ukraine praise.
Globalist Support Weakening?
This unraveling of Ukraine’s internal integrity may also signal a fracturing of the Western globalist consensus that initially rallied behind Zelensky. While corporate media and political elites embraced his war narrative, they are now being forced to confront the uncomfortable reality: Zelensky may be less a freedom fighter and more a technocratic strongman backed by billions in unaccountable foreign aid.
