Centuries-Old Dispute Explodes Into Modern Warfare

The confrontation—centered on contested territory around a sacred Khmer-Hindu temple near the border—has roots that trace back over a hundred years, involving colonial-era maps, ethnic rivalries, and nationalistic fervor.

On Thursday morning, gunfire erupted in the early hours, escalating into rocket attacks, artillery strikes, and even Thai air raids on Cambodian military positions. Thailand has since closed its border with Cambodia, while Phnom Penh responded by downgrading diplomatic relations and accusing Bangkok of “excessive force.”

According to Thailand’s National Security Council (NSC), the incident began when Cambodia deployed drones to surveil Thai troops near the border. Moments later, Cambodian soldiers armed with rocket-propelled grenades amassed nearby. Thai soldiers attempted verbal negotiations but were met with gunfire at around 08:20 AM, forcing a deadly retaliatory exchange.

Thailand claims Cambodia used BM-21 rocket launchers and heavy artillery, which damaged homes, a petrol station, and even a hospital on the Thai side of the border.

Cambodia Tells a Different Story

Cambodia, meanwhile, insists Thailand fired first—violating an earlier agreement by advancing on a historically contested temple site, laying down barbed wire, and conducting drone operations near sensitive territory.

According to Maly Socheata, spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, Thai forces began by firing warning shots into the air around 08:30, before launching a full-scale assault at 08:46 AM. Cambodian forces responded “in self-defense,” Socheata said, accusing Thailand of deploying excessive troops, initiating air strikes, and attempting to intimidate Cambodia into ceding sovereignty.

As of this writing, Cambodia has not confirmed casualty numbers, but witnesses on both sides report extensive damage and injuries.

Civilians Flee As Conflict Intensifies

Thailand has evacuated more than 40,000 civilians from the danger zone, particularly from Buriram, Sisaket, and Surin provinces. Locals described scenes of chaos and fear as rockets struck civilian infrastructure and military aircraft roared overhead.

“[The fighting] is really serious. We’re in the middle of evacuating,” said Sutian Phiwchan, a resident of Thailand’s Ban Dan district.

The Cambodian government has urged its citizens near the border to also leave the area immediately, fueling fears of a wider humanitarian crisis should hostilities resume.

This isn’t the first time the two countries have clashed over this region. Deadly skirmishes in 2008, 2011, and 2013 were also sparked by competing claims over the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site with deep historical significance to both nations.
