The petition represents a direct rebuke of federal health policy since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and it reignites the battle over who controls access to early treatment options.

The petition, filed July 5th, demands that the FDA reclassify HCQ and ivermectin—two off-patent drugs once vilified during the height of COVID—as safe and effective for general public use without prescription. AFLDS argues that decades of safety data, including widespread use in developing countries, prove these medications pose far fewer risks than many current OTC drugs.
